The Skins try to keep momentum rolling into the playoffs from a 3 game spurt as they travel to Seattle in what is considered one of the toughest stadium's to play in the NFL. Will the Skins beat the odds again?
The Redskins: The Washington Redskins enter the weekend's NFL wild-card playoff round buoyed by the momentum of four straight must-win victories and the emotion of playing for one of their slain stars. They also have one of the toughest tasks, traveling cross-country on a short week to play a team with plenty of postseason experience. And at a stadium that for the last few seasons has been one of the toughest in the NFL for visitors. Yet the Redskins go to Seattle on Saturday supremely confident that the emotion from the death of Sean Taylor and the play of quarterback Todd Collins, who went 10 years without a start until this season, will continue to carry them. Washington was 5-7 and seemingly out of contention when the 36-year-old Collins took over for the injured Jason Campbell against Chicago and carried the Redskins to victory. He made his first start in a decade in a win over the Giants, and then directed the team to wins over Minnesota and Dallas to get into the playoffs as the NFC's sixth and final seed.
The Seahawks: The Seahawks (10-6) have far less momentum. They clinched the weak NFC West on Dec. 9 and lost two of their final three as they rested regulars and prepared more for the postseason than for the games at hand. They had to go cross-country, too - to Atlanta - but they didn't invest much effort there, losing 44-41 in a meaningless game.
One thing they accomplished was rushing the ball better. The five-game winning streak that put them in position to rest was largely the result of Matt Hasselbeck's passing. Those last three games were used to try to improve the running game, which finished 20th overall in yards gained.
Injuries: The Seahawks took a few setbacks over the past week including matt Hasselbeck’s wrist injury. He has practiced this week, but intel reports states he is having problems with accuracy. This could be a huge factor against a tough Washington secondary. Another injury to the Seahawks is with Deion Branch who is arguably Matt’s best receiver is doubtful for this game. The Seahawks have allot of weapons, but no doubt this combination of injuries is going to have an effect on this finesse offense that’s loves to pass the ball.
Point: On paper, it looks as the Seahawks will chalk up another playoff victory and win at home. As the 12th man for Seattle is enough to rattle any QB, especially Todd Collins. But, one thing you can’t deny is the way this Redskins team is playing right now. They have won their last 4 games with Todd Collins at the helm and have done it with passion. They bring HEAVY momentum and intensity into this game. Their defense has made statements against some top rushing attacks in the NFL (Vikings and Giants), holding their last 4 points to an average of 13 points per game. The Seahawks bring a 1-Dimensional spread offensive attack that uses the pass to open up the run. Washington’s defense is at its best when they stop the run. But, the fact that Seattle does not use the run much makes this matchup intriguing. The thing with this game is that Hasselbeck is still nursing a wrist injury, and any football player knows that a wrist or hand injury can effect accuracy, and Hasselbeck has openly admitted that he has had problems with accuracy all week. This week he is without one of his top receivers in Branch and even though Seattle has allot of playmakers on offense, these 2 factors will weigh heavily as the game wears on.
Intangibles – Revenge and Emotion – 2 years ago Washington came to Seattle in this same playoff game and lost 20-10, this was with fewer offensive weapons and Brunell at the helm. This year is much different for the Redskins as they have a formidable running attack and a QB that has not made any mistakes in his 4 game winning streak. Gibbs will shoot for revenge today against this Seahawks club and will cause fits for this Seahawks defense, unlike last time. Expect some trick plays and risks by Washington as they know this is the only way they will have a chance to stay in this game. The hearts are heavy in Washington as the last half of this season has been dedicated to Sean Taylor. What looks to be as some type of divine intervention has propelled this Redskins team to the level of play they are executing right now – they simply act and play like a team of destiny.
With the combination of emotion and recent game-play that the Skins bring to this game act as a formidable weapon to bring to Seattle. The Seahawks have played substantially weaker schedule whereas the Skins have played and beaten playoff opponents. The Seahawks are a finesse team and the Skins are a smash-mouth nose-grinding football team that loves to pound the football and run clock. Gibbs style of play is perfect for these conditions. You have to simply love the Skins getting 3.5 points in this game as they are simply rolling right now!
